Review: The Awakening: Liam

The Awakening: Liam
The Awakening: Liam by Abby Niles

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I did not read The Awakening, Book 1 prior to picking this book up, but I don't think it really hindered my enjoyment of this one. We jump right into the action from the start and get enough information along the way to properly acclimate. There is a whole unique world of shifters, complete with government, enforcers, and new language that exist for Liam and his estranged mate, Ava. We join the story after a lot of drama has happened between Ava and Liam. Unfortunately, they are no longer together and Liam is suffering on a whole different level than Ava. Having bonded, this puts him in a sort of eternal torture.

At some point in the past, Liam made a huge enemy. This enemy drives the overall plot of this book by kidnapping Ava and somehow making her appear dead to Liam (in that magic mated shifter place inside). Here's where the dark part of the story hit. I'm not usually a fan of books that include torture or the sort of terror that is inflicted in this book, but it was done in such a way that it was necessary.

The love story between Liam and Ava was heartbreaking and moving. I was rooting for them every step of the way. There was also a lot of sizzle between the two, even when they were supposed to be apart. Yummy shifter goodness and lots of smut to keep the smut readers happy. This is a unique shifter series that I'll be keeping my eye on for future installments!
