Review: Darkness Hunts

Darkness Hunts
Darkness Hunts by Keri Arthur

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

These books are really addictive. This one in particular left me really wanting more.

It felt like this book found us with Risa constantly having the same two conversations over and over. "I don't trust Lucian, but I want him, and Azriel hates him" and "I really want Azriel, but we can't be together, but we want to be together." On their own, it wouldn't be so painful, but together and on repeat made the book a little frustrating. Especially since I'm fully in Team Azriel, and have been off of Team Lucian for quite some time.

While the larger keys story did not really progress in this book, we did get to check in while a lot of Team Risa to see how everyone is dealing with the fact that poor Risa's life is filled with constant danger. I was also happy with the further incorporation of Markel. It was also nice to see a lot more faces from the original series.

All in all, this book was a great read, just not necessarily a key installment for the series. I'm hoping that with the way this book ended, things will ramp up quickly in the next one.

Review: Kiss The Night Goodbye

Kiss The Night Goodbye
Kiss The Night Goodbye by Keri Arthur

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This last installment of the Nikki & Michael series really tied everything up nicely. This series has been a fun read that was hard to put down. It delivers everything I like about good paranormal romance.

In this book, we find Nikki and Michael in a much better place than in the past. They are honest and open with each other, working together to get Nikki in the Circle, and determined to move forward in their relationship. Of course, bad guys are always determined to mess things up for them. In this case, Michael gets kidnapped (again), leading Nikki to have to go "undercover" to rescue him from the bad guy that's sort of removed his memory.

This book was such a great read that I wish the series would just keep continuing. Gone are the days when I'd curse Nikki out for being needy. She was one tough chick all throughout this book, no matter what Michael threw at her. She was confident and completely awesome. Michael was also a lot more open in this book and more willing to trust Nikki to do her thing. What a great way to tie up a series!

Review: Accidentally in Love with...A God?

Accidentally in Love with...A God?
Accidentally in Love with...A God? by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow -- what a really fun and great read! The writing was witty, sarcastic, and completely entertaining from start to finish. I'm not sure why I haven't read this series before, but I will be diving in to the next book ASAP!

This book begins with a poor girl named Emma who has been hearing a man's voice in her head her entire life. This has obviously put a bit of a strain on her social life, especially since he appears to be the jealous type. The man in her head? He's a god that's been trapped in a sort of portal in the jungle. In a bid to finally live a normal life, Emma is convinced by "Guy" (her chosen name for him), to head blindly into the jungle to free him and her from this "curse".

I can honestly say that I've never read a story like this one, and I've read a lot of paranormal romance. This one created a unique universe that has new types of gods, a secret society of their allies, and a bunch of baddies out to destroy the world. The sizzle and chemistry in this book was off the charts hot, too, without going into erotica territory. Really great characters and one tough chick heroine really had me absorbed in this book from the beginning. Fans of paranormal romance should definitely check this series out!

Review: Sera's Gift

Sera's Gift
Sera's Gift by Teal Ceagh

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

These books have been a great little guilty pleasure. They are jam packed with erotica and the world that they are set in is pretty unique.

This installment ties up the last of the trinities with Blake (a cop), Sera (an elf), and Diego (a vampire). This ties together the last of the lingering side characters that I was interested in, and we get a little bit of a deeper glimpse into Diego's past. This author really knows her audience, so most of the time is spent on the steamy scenes, with a little action and whatnot thrown in between. I personally enjoy it, as you can tell by the fact that I've read all three at a speedy pace.

Review: Four Weddings and a Werewolf

Four Weddings and a Werewolf
Four Weddings and a Werewolf by Kristin Miller

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This was a really fun read. It was filled with lots of steamy paranormal romance, hot werewolves, and some action to keep the story going.

Veronica is a self employed wedding planner who is determined and very set in her ways. Logan is a werewolf bodyguard employed by Veronica's soon to be brother-in-law to keep on eye on her. She's been getting love letters that have quickly escalated, indicating that a werewolf stalker might be following her around. What starts as just a fling grows into a really sweet romance filled with misunderstandings and misconceptions.

I haven't read anything else by this author, and didn't even realize there was a book before this one in the series, but it didn't hinder my enjoyment of this one. The characters were fun and a great joy to discover. I'll be checking out this author in the future.

Review: Kiss Me, Kill Me

Kiss Me, Kill Me
Kiss Me, Kill Me by H.P. Mallory

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I've been working on reading this short story anthology for quite some time. This was sort of a mixed bag -- some I really liked, some were not really my style. All in all, it was a good read. I'm not so good at reviewing short stories as a big review, so here's the breakdown.

A Ghoulish Valentine by H.P. Mallory: This was the story I wanted this book for. I love the Knight/Dulcie chemistry and this was an adorable installment in the series. Poor Knight can’t seem to get a break and it was fun to watch.

Cat Fight by Zoe Winters: I was unfamiliar with this author when I picked this book up. This story was a short but sweet little comedy about a man who is in the middle of a fight with his cat shifter wife. Hilarity ensues.

Impulse Control by Susan Bischoff: I’ve also never read anything from this author before, but the story that she draws upon is really interesting. The world it takes place in is one from the Talent Chronicles (the author’s series) where superpowered kids are in a school together that is run by the government. There is some adorable YA romance that manages to get squeezed into this action packed story.

A Fairytale Ending by M.T. Murphy: This was one of the darker stories in the bunch. A waitress is trying to eek out a living while inadvertently throwing herself into a werewolf/vampire power struggle. The poor mortals always lose in that situation.

Blind Sight by Kait Nolan: Such a tease! Normally I don’t complain about short stories wanting me to read more, but this one literally ended in the middle of a scene! Sheesh. I immediately searched for other books by the author (the point of this tease, I guess) and it looks like a longer version is already on my kindle (from a free book). I’ll stop complaining now. This is the beginning of a story about Isla, a seer, and her unlikely rescuer, Ransom. The world appears to be contemporary, maybe, and filled with paranormals and magic. Isla is being kept as a fake daughter of some mob-type guy, who I guess warrants being free of. There wasn’t much further development, but it really did suck me in. I wish we got to see what happened with Ransom.

Wild Passion by Lori Brighton: I recently fell in love with Lori Brighton in her Mind Readers series. This isn’t set in the same story, but was a good read either way. It follows James and Adelaide as they bicker and flirt over a piece of treasure. If this was the start of a bigger story, I’d pick it up just to get more. James was a great character and we watched him grow a lot, even in this short story.

The Sacrifice by Toni LoTempio:
This story was very similar to old Dracula tales, with a twist (and a contemporary edge). Jennifer leaves her long time boyfriend suddenly for Alfred, who turns out to be controlling her with dark magic to get her to be his sacrifice. This was a pretty fleshed out story and it was interesting enough to have me breezing through it.

Until the Breaking of the Day by Daniel Arenson:
This was another story where I was a severe disadvantage by not knowing any backstory or previous history with this type of world. Fantasy is not really my thing, but by the end of the story I wanted to read more. From what I gather, this took place in a hell-like world where a bat-like woman is forced to marry a supposedly harsh ruler.

If You Leave by Stacey Wallace Benefiel:
Tied into the world I know from the Zellie Wells books, this continued Gabrielle's story. It was bittersweet and short, showing how Jorge copes with Gabrielle's death (and afterlife). I love this author, so it was no surprise that I loved this little gem.

Review: Ruled by Steel

Ruled by Steel
Ruled by Steel by S.M. Reine

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Sigh. James and Elise. I love these characters to death. This book was such a good read and I’m desperate for more. There was a healthy dose of action, mystery, and a smidge of hope (enough to keep me in my blissfully romantic world where Elise and James finally find common ground again).

This story followed mostly Elise, Nash, and a little bit of James. Sigh – I love James. Elise is trying to fix the horrible state that things were left at the end of the last book. While certainly not a straightforward hero, Elise is always taking on seemingly impossible tasks that no one else can handle. She is the ultimate in tough chick heroines and just keeps getting more powerful as the series moves along. James, on the other hand, straddles the line between hero and villain. Yes, he has done and will probably continue to do some truly horrible things, but he usually does them for some truly amazing reasons. His magic ties him to Elise and because of that, all of her heroic deeds need him. Watching him come to the aid of the anti-damsel in distress just makes my heart go all aflutter. I’ll be rooting for them until they are both dead (for real).

We also saw a lot of backstory for some other characters in this book. I was glad to see where some of my favorites ended up. I still hate Anthony. Everything he does makes me hate him more. I am growing more fond of Elise’s “crew” with each passing book. Nash was an interesting character to follow around for a bit, and was a nice breath of fresh air compared to the turmoil and general unhappiness of all the other characters at the sanctuary. I am also happy that we touched base again about why James is doing his crazy deeds. Have I mentioned how much I love James?

These books are so well written and highly addictive that I don’t know how I could have survived without them. Starting these books is like putting on your favorite PJs (even if they are a little scratchy from time to time). The characters are so well developed and interesting that I hope these series and spinoffs never end.

Review: Friends vs. Family

Friends vs. Family
Friends vs. Family by C.L. Stone

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I am in love with this series. It's not really paranormal and it's totally filled with a naive girl (which is usually the type of thing that bothers me) but I just keep eating these books up! Something about the combination of the YA-stomach-fluttery-goodness and yummy yummy guys (does this make me a pervert?) just makes these books so good!

This book picks up with Sang and the boys right after the last book. Sang is still a naive and very shy little girl (though she's growing) and the boys are still as dreamy and concerned for her as before. After getting caught for something that was actually not as bad as what she's been doing most of the time, her mother almost kills her during punishment. This, of course, leads the boys to threaten to run away with her and otherwise protect the crap out of her in their own way. Sang, being the loyal and protective daughter that she's always been, tries to find a happy medium.

I was a little concerned that the length of this book when compared to the others would be a deterrent. It totally wasn't. This book was filled with a lot of high school girl fantasies (mall shopping spree, guys giving her a makeover, sleepovers, etc etc) that I could've read 300 more pages of this book. Even with all the information and snuggle time we got, I am still dying for more. I can't wait to read the next one! Give me more!

Review: Rogue's Possession

Rogue's Possession
Rogue's Possession by Jeffe Kennedy

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a really great read, even having not read the first book in the series. Set in a fantasy world, not unlike the fairy world from the Dark Swan books, the world that the author describes really grabbed me. I’m not typically a fan of fantasy books (usually tending to read more contemporary paranormal romance), but this story had a good blend of a contemporary main character thrown into a paranormal rich world.

The human in this story finds herself as a very powerful sorceress, trapped into agreements with Falcon (a war obsessed tyrant) and Rogue (a sexy and domineering sorcerer). While trying to negotiate herself out of her obligations, she is forced to constantly fight her growing attraction and affection for Rogue. His game appears to be rather complex, but ultimately he needs to get her pregnant (which obviously involves lots of sexy time… none of which I would have minded). The clever dialogue and adventure really hooked me. As I said, fantasy is not really my thing, but this book really sold me on it.

The way this book ends left me a little conflicted. I am happy with where their relationship ended up, but so very unsettled with how it got there. This book definitely has a dark twist to it that somewhat overshadows the “happy” ending. I’d be eager to see what the author has in store for book 3!

Review: Esprit de Corpse

Esprit de Corpse
Esprit de Corpse by Gina X. Grant

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This third book in the series has all the fun Kirsty action that I loved about the first two. The humor and heart is still in the story as the reapers take on a new challenge. I love these books to itty bitty bits, and eagerly tear through each one. They are like little treats filled with oodles of wordplay goodness.

Having set herself up for trouble by not following one of the key reaper rules (don't touch someone else's scythe), Kirsty is forced to head back to the "coil" to hunt down the seemingly unstoppable Conrad. Sadly, Kirsty and Dante are still trying to figure out their working relationship and this leads to a lot of jealousy and arguments. On the upside, we get to learn a lot more about Kirsty's one true friend, Shannon, and how they all ended up in this crazy mixed-up situation.

These short reads are such a joy. They are fun and witty, while also filled with a ton of heart. If you're looking for a read that will make you smile -- this is the series to check out.

Review: Hear No

Hear No
Hear No by Lizzy Ford

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I’m a big Lizzy Ford fan, and this book just reinforced why I love reading her books. As the start of a new series, I didn’t have any expectations. This book really sucked me in from the start. The characters were all really well thought out and engaging. Of course, I especially loved Nathan.

This series takes place in a world where angels are wandering around earth as humans, with only their spirit guides to ground them. Nathan is a jaded and cocky spirit guide who, while he gets the job done, does it in the most unorthodox fashion imaginable. While rescuing an incarnated angel from a mental hospital, Nathan stumbles upon Kaylee, an equally jaded junior attorney who just so happens to be stalked by “Shadowman”, her very own fallen guardian angel. Their lives intersect and poor, jaded Nathan finds himself actually feeling for the first time in years.

Nathan and Kaylee’s love story was set up nicely in this first book. I found myself really falling in love with the characters (especially the side characters in the form of Eddy, Troy, and Maggie). I loved the alpha-ness of Nathan’s character, especially when thrown up against the decidedly stubborn Kaylee. The action was good, and if I had to choose something to criticize it would only be that the story does not wrap up in this book. We are left with a cliffhanger of sorts and I’m absolutely dying to see what happens next.

Review: Undertow

Undertow
Undertow by K.R. Conway

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Wow. This book really blew me away. After reading a lot of YA in the past year, it really takes something special to get 5 stars, but this book really did it.

This book follows Eila as she begins her journey. After finding out she has essentially inherited a house in Cape Cod, she and her guardian, Mae, pack up all their belongings to move from Kansas to the small beach community. Putting aside the mystery of their home ownership, Eila befriends MJ and Ana on her first day, along with attracting the attention of the mysterious hottie, Raef. Sigh. I love a good YA high school story, and this one only grew from there. Turns out that Eila and Raef are more like Romeo and Juliet than they even imagine.

The story might sound reminiscent of other YA reads, but the twists and turns really made it unique. I couldn't get myself to put the book down! The writing and story pacing kept me dying to read more. There were no torturous cliffhangers or painful misunderstanding fights to suffer through. This book was pure enjoyment from start to finish.

The romance is clearly one of my criteria for picking up a book to read. In this story, there was tons of chemistry and sizzle without veering into adult territory. I can't wait to see where the series takes Eila and Raef (and all their friends!). The paranormals in this story were a different variation and combination than I've encountered before, so I'm eager to see how the future books continue to explain all their gifts and powers. Watching Eila develop will also be great to see as she is already turning out to be a very brave and well rounded young girl. I don't think the next book can come out fast enough.

If you're into YA paranormal romance, you should read this book. It will have you sighing and smiling like a teenager again.

Review: The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers

The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers
The Dangerous Book for Demon Slayers by Angie Fox

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book was another fun read that followed Lizzie on her adventures in Demon Slaying. It was still the same silly gang, complete with biker grannies and talking dogs. I'm not really sure that I liked this one as much as the first book, but it was close.

We get to see a very controlling yet still sizzling hot Dimitri, although not nearly enough of him. Lizzie gets stuck in this spiral of "I don't need anyone!", then "I need help!", then back to "I don't need anyone!", etc etc. One of my pet peeves is whiney female main characters, and this book bordered on pushing my buttons.

There was a bunch of relationship development, mostly in the form of a sort of power struggle between Dimitri and Lizzie. At first I was worried Lizzie would roll into Las Vegas to find Dimitri playing it up with some strippers, but I'm glad that this series doesn't appear to be playing the break up/make up card just yet.

I was also happy to see a new character, in the form of Max, who we will hopefully see more of in the future books. I look forward to seeing where the story goes from here!

Review: Dead Sexy

Dead Sexy
Dead Sexy by Paige Tyler

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I admit to being a little reluctant about reading another zombie book. I am not a zombie book fan and have in the past been completely turned off by the zombie paranormal romance genre. This book completely change my mind! Not only was this book completely filled with sizzling scenes, it also managed to involve a zombie without grossing me out.

The story follows Drake Parrish, a womanizer and Wall Street executive who has his ego punished by a Voodoo priestess. Now a part-time zombie, full time editor, he ends up connecting with Simone, a romance novelist in need of some writer's block advice. The two hit it off in such a genuine and realistic way that I completely disregarded the whole zombie angle. The conversations they have are so very... real. It's hard to explain the easy back and forth, the witty banter that we get to see in this book. It totally drew me in and had me adding the author to my favorites list instantly.

Of course, things can't just be smooth sailing. The Voodoo priestess can't have Drake enjoying any of his new relationship with Simone, which leads to a lot of zombie chase scenes and standoffs, providing a very healthy dose of action in this otherwise very romantic and smutty read. The balance was just right for me and was really nicely done.

If you're looking for a truly steamy read that will keep you on the edge of your seat, this is the book for you. This book truly convinced me that there is such a thing as a sexy zombie.

First Bite
First Bite by Dani Harper

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a really fun read. It was quick paced, steamy, and filled with werewolf-y goodness. The story follows Neva, a girl who has been "changed" against her will. While trying to stop the evil witch/werewolf that turned her, she (and her wolf) discover Travis, a yummy changeling who reluctantly discovers he is drawn to Neva.

There were a lot of twists and turns along the way, but overall this is a fun story. I'm a big fan of shifter tales, and this one had some unique spins on the traditional boy-meets-girl story. While stubborn and frustrated, Neva was still a great main character. Travis was a great companion and guide as she grew closer to her wolf. The internal wolf dialogue was also a great addition. I look forward to seeing where this series goes in the future. Hopefully we get to see a lot of the characters we were introduced to in this book.

Cold Blooded by Amanda Carlson

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

These books are really fantastic reads! I’m completely addicted to this series and cannot wait to see where the story continues to take me. The book is jam packed with action, steamy romance, and oodles of paranormal intrigue. If any of those things interest you, this book series should not be missed.

This story picks up immediately where Book 2 left us. Jessica and her crew are teaming up with Tally to get Marcy back from the clutches of the sorcerers. Now an alpha of the weirdest possible group of paranormals, Jessica has a lot of juggling that needs to get done to make sure no alliances are broken and no one gets killed in the process. The pace is quick and the writing style is still perfect and polished. I absolutely love the new Ray and am still madly in love with Danny. The witty dialogue and sarcasm had me devouring this book.

This book also gave me something I’ve been dying to see since the first book – steamy scenes. After all the buildup, Rourke and Jessica finally get to connect in this book because they are able to travel in their “pack.” It was good to see all the characters throughout most of the book without any tradeoffs. I hope to see the backstory behind Marcy’s disappearance in the form of a short story or bonus feature. Other than that, I can’t imagine anything that would make this book better.

Review: From The Ashes

From The Ashes
From The Ashes by K.L. Kerr

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Having not read any of the Blood of Ages books prior to this one, I came at the story pretty blind. The book was about Michael, a newly turned vampire, who is stumbling through his new life trying to fit in. Vincent, a much older and more “traditional” vampire, takes Michael under his wing and makes sure that Michael doesn’t fumble around too much. As Michael struggles to learn more about his new world, he finds himself face to face with a group of hunters determined to exterminate the vampire race.

I have to admit, my favorite part of this book was the interaction between Michael and Vincent. Their relationship was very reminiscent of the Lestat/Louis dynamic, without the sexual overtones. The father/son relationship twists into a friendship somehow throughout the book, and it was a great joy to watch Vincent’s hard exterior begin to crack a little.

Vincent was by far my favorite character in the book. I had a hard time getting into Michael’s story when it didn’t involve Vincent. The love story elements were brief and did not really engage me much. Michael’s fighting history was a little boring for a non-fighter like me to read over and over again. I assume it ties in to the other books in the series in some way because so much time was spent on it, but I have no point of reference for that. The ending of this book is a big downer, so you should prepare yourself adequately for it.

Overall, this was a well written book that had a lot of interesting characters and development. I just felt like it was missing something, but that could totally be my lack of exposure to the other books. There might be some revelations that I missed along the way. I really loved Vincent, though.

Review: The League of Delphi

The League of Delphi
The League of Delphi by Chris Everheart

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was a really great, quick read that had me racing through the short and wonderfully paced chapters at super speed! The writing style was very easy and enjoyable, the characters were interesting and filled with secrets, and the story was enough of a mystery to keep you guessing all the way until the end.

Zach has returned to his hometown to rediscover who he is. Playing the role of "outsider", he gets to observe all his old schoolmates without being scrutinized. After all this mother's warnings about never returning there, Zach should have really realized there was reason to be worried. There are mysteries and secrets within everything he discovers about this "normal" town. The story really has some unique elements to it that drew me in right away.

I inadvertently read these books out of order, but it didn't actually hurt my enjoyment at all. The author's storytelling methods are engaging no matter what your exposure his books. I can't wait to see how the trilogy ends!

Review: The Delphi Deception

The Delphi Deception
The Delphi Deception by Chris Everheart

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

The League of Delphi was a really fast paced read that had me quickly turning pages to see what happened next! The chapters were short, which really helped set the pace properly. The story is told in one of my favorite ways -- you just leap right into the story and get the character history when you need it. This book also had the bonus of being set after a major event happened, which only grabbed my attention even more! Love it!

This second installment of the Delphi Trilogy follows "Zach" around as he tries to get a grip on the life that has begun spiraling out of control. There's a good dose of secrets, betrayal, and oracles to keep him on his toes. I was a little worried that a book lacking the usual players in the YA paranormal romance game (i.e. shifters, vampires, etc + some "girl moving to a new town") wouldn't keep my interest, but I was pleasantly surprised by this unique tale.

I can't wait to see what happens in the rest of the trilogy, especially considering where this book left us!

Claimed by the Demon by Doranna Durgin

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have not read the first book of this series, but I think this book worked well as a stand alone read. This book introduces Mac, an attempted good guy who is in possession of a demon blade that is trying to take him over. Drawn to evil intentions and situations where he is given a choice between saving people and killing people, he has so far stayed on the side of saving people. Gwen is a brave and outspoken woman who suddenly felt very drawn to a particular location while on walkabout. Running into Mac was obviously not her intention, but the two are drawn to each other none the less. Gwen takes up the task of helping Mac in his battle for control, while discovering even more about her mysterious past.

This book was filled with a lot of action and romance. It was nice to see a tough chick who can hold her own in very scary situations. Without Gwen, Mac would've been completely lost. I really enjoyed watching their relationship grow. Obviously I missed some of the back story by skipping book 1, but the story that I did get was interesting enough to get me reading book 3 when it comes along.

Closed Hearts by Susan Kaye Quinn

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

These books are completely addictive! I love the world that the author has built -- it is completely unique! The story itself has me eagerly tearing through these books, even though the genre is not my typical read. They are a blend of futuristic sci-fi and YA, with a dash of romance thrown in.

In this book we meet up again with Kira. She's been busy "rooking" as a reader while also working as a "mindguard" for her benefactor with her father. She and Raf are still seeing each other, against everyone's wishes. Of course, after becoming the face of the jacker revolution, whether she wanted to or not, she has accumulated a bunch of enemies. There were a number of loose ends she left when she escaped from the prison, and it appears that was a big mistake on her part.

Using Raf as leverage, Kira is forced to work with a band of other jackers with a completely new skill set. I am in love with Julian. I really hope we get to see more of the new "gang" in future books. The interaction between this group was really great. I was 100% a Raf supporter, but after the completely devastating and heart breaking events in this book, I'm ready for Kira to have some good times with Julian and his band of misfits.

I really can't say enough good things about this series. If you're looking for something completely new and interesting, these books are wonderful reads.

Sacrificed in Shadow
Sacrificed in Shadow by S.M. Reine

My rating: 5 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I could not get my hands on this book fast enough! I am absolutely in love with both of the series that come together in this book. After picking this book up, I seriously considered calling out sick from work just to finish uninterrupted.

Even after all the expectation I had for this series, I still don't think I would change a single thing about this book. It was filled with all the things I was hoping for: We get a good dose of James and Elise (in all their dysfunctional glory), answering all my questions about where they ended up after their last book. We get to learn a little more about Nash, which is exactly what I wanted after completing his book. Seth gets more time in the spotlight, to make up for him being away in the last book. Some familiar supporting characters and references show up along the way, which makes me feel like a little fan girl. Anthony is only present in small sections of the book (a plus for me, because I still hate him). There is tons of action, which really kept the pages turning. Lastly, the story was what I've come to expect from this author - great!

I love a story that can keep me guessing until the last few chapters. It's so rare that you can pick up a book, especially this deep into the series (or more than one series), and still be surprised at the twists and turns the author throws at you. I can't wait to see where this new Ascension Series goes and I'll be counting down the days until the next book comes out!

Review: Tempt Me

Tempt Me
Tempt Me by Tamara Hogan

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Having not read any of the other Underbelly Chronicles, I was worried that I would be at a disadvantage. Not true! If anything, this book made me want to read the other books in this series right away. The characters are interesting, the world rich and developed, and the story was more than your average paranormal romance.

We meet up with Rafe and Bailey, thrown together through some random circumstances after a one night stand a year ago. Bailey is a human working with and surrounded by "others" while Rafe is a sex demon/artist/hottie who is absolutely obsessed with Bailey. It was great watching the power shift between Bailey and Rafe throughout their romance and rekindling of their relationship. The interaction between them is really genuine and was entertaining to say the least.

The steamy scenes were nicely done, but not overly smutty. This was really more of a romance than a steamy read. The story was really engaging and I found myself tearing through the pages quickly to see what happened next. If you're looking for a paranormal romance that will suck you into the author's unique world, check this book out.

Review: Perfect Mate

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Having not read the previous book in the series, I didn’t have a history with the two main characters, Julia and Damien. This novella must pick up immediately where that book ends, because it is definitely in the middle of something. The story was action-packed, romantic, and even a little dark. There were a lot of revelations in this story that came up quickly one after another, leading to a quick paced read.

Julia and Damian are a human and werewolf in love. They appear to be destined for each other in some way that this story calls the “Calling”. I’m not sure what age Julia is supposed to be, but if she’s not very young, she comes across pretty sheltered. She certainly is brave, though, in all the fight scenes and craziness that surrounds her. The devotion she has for Damien is also clear, as she quickly overlooks any sort of negatives associated with him eventually turning into a wolf.

The story was interesting enough for me to want to check out any follow-up stories in this series. There were a lot of unique characters thrown in that could be used as a jumping off point for more books in the future (that I would totally read).

Review: Mia’s Return

Mia’s Return
Mia’s Return by Teal Ceagh

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is the second installment of the Destiny’s Trinities series and gives us more of the “trinity” we know and love. The book was filled with lots of sizzling hotness and action!

This story is a vampire/woman/hunter combination, which doesn’t just recreate the first installment with different characters. Here, Mia and Alexander have a steamy past that just won’t let either of them go. Before Alexander became a vampire, he was madly in love (and lust) with Mia. Following his maker’s rules, he hasn’t reached out to her in years. A lucky coincidence throws Mia back into Alexander’s life and pulls Wyatt, an unsuspecting hunter, in too. Much hotness ensues.

The bigger story is moving along and I am eager to see where it leads. These hot little stories are enough to keep me interested and looking for the next release.

Review: Red Hot Dragon

Red Hot Dragon
Red Hot Dragon by Lolita Lopez

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I will read as many of these books as the author writes. They are amazing little bite sized paranormal romances that center on a group of dragon shifters. I wasn’t sold on the idea of dragon shifters being remotely sexy, but these books are HOT HOT HOT. This book can absolutely be read as a standalone book, but you should really read the first one if you liked this one even a little bit.

In this one, we meet up with Griffin, a dragon shifter, and his best friend Mad. While sparring in their gym, Griffin is essentially propositioned by Avani, a female dragon/snake shifter who is desperate to keep her family going. Being the last of her line, and going into her mating heat, she is willing to put aside the bad blood their two families have to do what’s best for her race. Of course, one thing leads to another, and many many steamy pages in between, love might actually become a possibility between these two.

As I said above, these books are really great. They have some action, lots of steamy paranormal romance, and a group of characters that I am interested in reading about. I can’t wait to read more!

Review: Dragon Rising

Dragon Rising
Dragon Rising by Jaime Rush

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I have not read any other books from this series, and I don’t think it impacted my enjoyment of this story at all. This was a really great, short read set in a unique and imaginative world. I’d be interested in checking out more from this series if this is what the author can accomplish in a novella format.

This story follows Lyra, a dragon shifter who is trying to track down the person who kidnapped her father. The trail leads her straight to Archer, a Caido, who cannot be close to others without suffering the pain of their emotions. The bonus ironic twist to his “condition” is that Caidos are innately sexual and supernaturally beautiful. The combination of a fiery dragon and a sexy Caido really sizzles in this book. The witty dialogue and interactions that Lyra and Archer share made for some great reading. You get a bit of action, some steamy scenes, and a lot of story packed into a bite sized portion. I highly recommend this as a quick paranormal romance read.

Review: Broken Wings

Broken Wings
Broken Wings by Cameo Renae

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

This book was an immediately continuation to Book 1, picking up minutes after the ending. Emma and her Guardians are still trapped, Kade has just run off, and there are a lot of injuries that need tending. With that as a starting point, the story really takes off from there. Kade returns, but there are some big changes that took place while he was away seeking help from the Midway.

I loved the YA love story from Book 1, but, sadly, there are a lot of things that need to happen in this book before Emma can devote time to her love life. Instead, Emma is tasked with going on a journey to Hell with her own mini-posse. This book was almost a road trip type, where a select few go on a trip that takes them away from the typical setting. In this case, the setting was Hell’s levels, each filled with horrible guards that want to kill them.

Emma’s powers and courage really grew in this book, leaving her a much stronger person in the end. She’ll need to be strong, because this book ended with her in a horrible bind. She’s got to make hard choices, stop Lucian, and work out her own issues (her parents just died a little while ago!). I’m eager to see where she heads, and I would really like a healthy dose of YA romance to make up for all the yucky monster slaying.

Review: Heavy Metal Heart

Heavy Metal Heart
Heavy Metal Heart by Nico Rosso

My rating: 3 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was filled with steamy rock star hotness with a rather unique paranormal twist. Trevor is a yummy rock star who also just happens to feed off the crowd’s energy – literally. As a type of satyr, he is bound to be eternally looking for his Muse, whom he has long thought to be just a legend. His muse will be the only person who can ultimately sustain him. Misty is a woman in a thankless job that has fallen in love with Trevor’s music. After chasing him to an impromptu gig, Misty discovers that their magnetism is more than just groupie lust.

There is a lot of sex thrown in to the Muse/satyr connection, which I much enjoyed. The writing style was something that I haven’t really encountered before. It was almost like reading a book filled with poetry, that just so happened to also be a paranormal romance. It was a pretty quick book, so I can recommend this book for a steamy night read.
