The Kiss of Death by Joshua Mumphrey
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
This short prequel to what is undoubtedly a more complex novel gives us a firsthand view of the untimely death of a high schooler. You get hints at a later transformation (that I assume happens in the corresponding novel), but the basis for this short story is to see his demise. We get a taste of who he was in high school - the rebellious, car-racing, math wiz - but we also see how he acts when he knows he is going to die. I'd be interested to see what the bigger picture is here.
