Review: Elysian Fields
Elysian Fields by Suzanne Johnson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
As a disclaimer, I've never read any other "Sentinels of New Orleans" books prior to this one. That being said, I didn't have any trouble picking this book up and feeling right at home. The author's writing style was easy to follow and gave me enough information to keep me current on each of the characters. The main character, DJ, struck me as a good "tough chick" female lead. She really reminded me of Rachel Morgan (from Kim Harrison), except with a bit better decision making skills. Her love triangle (or octagon... or ... well... just a mess) was also sending me vibes from the Hollows universe. That's pretty much where the similarities ended, though. In this world the "pretes" are not out of the closet yet, so much time is spent trying to hide things from outsiders.
The main story line followed a police investigation. Usually not my favorite, but since this was done with such a paranormal element, I really enjoyed trying to solve the mystery. I even enjoyed the relationships and chaotic situations forced on DJ. All of the characters were really well written and sent me searching for other books by Suzanne Johnson immediately after finishing. This book was a lot more in depth than some of my recent reading, which means that there was a lot more substance and a lot less smut (although we did get a teeny bit!). I'm looking forward to checking out more from this author in the future.
