Review: A Highlander's Obsession

A Highlander's Obsession
A Highlander's Obsession by Vonnie Davis

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This book was such a pleasure to read! I wasn't sure what to expect from a book that took place in a castle but was described like a contemporary romance. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself laughing out loud along with most of the characters and really rooting for the main couple in the book.

Paisley is on a transatlantic funeral trip with her hilariously bawdy grandmother. The paranormal aspects are plentiful, even from the beginning. Paisley can hear the thoughts of animals, her grandmother is some form of witch, and it just so happens that the castle they are staying at is inhabited by bear shifters. Creighton is the eldest brother in charge of running the castle/inn. The trouble starts from the moment he sees Paisley and watches her faint upon hearing his thoughts. While not confirmed right away, they both have their suspicions that do nothing to temper the attraction.

Paisley has always played it safe with her safe job, her boring fiance, and her normal life. This is probably to try to balance out her very abnormal ability. She still uses that ability to help animals at her job, but she doesn't want any of the attention that "coming out" could get her. Her fiance seems obviously out for using her as his sole source of income. While separated by an ocean, Paisley takes the chance to be a little more daring and it was great to watch. She and Creighton are such opposites that they clash in a magnificent way. The flowery romance was balanced with some really great smut.

We met so many wonderful characters in this book that I cannot wait to see what happens next in this series. The world of these bear shifters was rich with history without being overwhelming as well as being filled with romance (and smut) without veering into erotica. What a great read!
