Review: Lucas

Lucas
Lucas by D.B. Reynolds

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

After reading the short story leading into this book, I was really eager to dive into the irreverent character of Lucas and his love interest, the strictly by the book FBI agent. It was a nice change from the typically strict vampire and the woman who messes up their world. This deviation from the “formula” led to a truly unique installment in the series.

Lucas is (as I said) one of the most relaxed and irreverent vampires in the bunch. He’s got some serious wit and humor that shines through all of his scenes. The fact that he has ties to the very uptight Raphael makes it even more rewarding to watch. Kathryn is an FBI agent on the search for her missing brother. This mystery kept me guessing and pointing fingers throughout the entire book and I didn’t even get it right. Throw our first vampire war into the mix, and this book is filled with action, vampire politics, and (of course) romance.

While the books all have a similar aim (vampire meets girl, they fall in love, lots of smut, mated pairs now), the differences are what make them really stand out. Lucas is a wonderful character addition to the group of vampire lords in that he gives them a bit of humor and heart. The romance between Lucas and Kathryn was sizzling and great fun to read. While she does fight a bit along the way, Lucas just keeps breaking rules to come catch her. I think they are a great matched pair and can’t wait to see what hijinks await them in the next installment.
